Different Facts About Shar-Pei (Part 3)

Shar-pei is one of the most popular dogs in the world that is found in many homes. From the beginning, he was known as a farm dog that accompanies his owner in hunting. This dog is often referred to as a miniature dog because he’s small and doesn’t have a large body. Many people who are looking for dog breeding are interested in keeping him. Because he’s suitable for the apartment at the same time as he has intelligence and mischief. This beautiful dog isn’t very interested in communicating with other dogs and prefers solitude. In the previous parts, we described the behavioural characteristics, communication with other children or dogs, and the different steps of grooming them. In this section, we will discuss their possible diseases.

Cancer

Some of the symptoms of cancer are:

  • Abnormal swelling of a wound or bump on the skin
  • Wounds that last a long time and do not heal
  • Bleeding from any of the body pores
  • Difficulty breathing or defecating

Seborrhea

The disease causes flaky skin and a sour smell. Seborrhea is usually a secondary disease caused by allergies, infections or other problems. In addition to treating the underlying disease, special shampoos are used to treat it.

Pyoderma

Pyoderma is a type of bacterial skin infection that is relatively common in the Shar-pei breed. It can also be a secondary infection due to underlying conditions such as allergies or hypothyroidism. This disease is treated with antibiotics.

Patellar dislocation

This problem is common in small dogs and usually in the knee joint of the hind legs. Patellar dislocation can cause lameness. Many dogs have a relatively normal life despite this problem.

Hip dysplasia

This disease is inherited and causes the femur to not fit right inside the hip joint. Some dogs show pain and lameness in one or both hind legs, but others don’t show any specific physical symptoms. X-rays are the safest way to diagnose this problem. Dogs infected with the disease aren’t suitable for breeding.

Flatulence or abdominal Strain

This condition is very dangerous and can kill a dog. Factors that increase the risk of bloating include eating one large meal a day instead of several small ones, eating fast, drinking plenty of water and strenuous activity after a meal. Flatulence occurs when the stomach expands with gas or air and then twists around itself. The dog can’t burp or vomit and get rid of excess air in his stomach.

Flatulence can lead to blood clots in the heart and lower blood pressure. It causes the dog to go into shock. Visit a veterinarian immediately. If you see your dog’s belly swell, saliva coming out of his mouth and vomiting without raising anything, he may be bloated. Other symptoms of bloating include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Lethargy and weakness
  • Increased heart rate

Cutaneous mucinosis

Mucin is the name of a transparent substance in the skin that causes wrinkles and acts like glue when injured. Some Shar-pei dogs have too much mucus, which causes clear blisters on the skin that may burst and the mucus may come out. Mucinosis may also be linked to allergies, and steroids are used to treat it.

Entropion

Entropion means turning the eyelid (usually the lower eyelid) inward. This condition can cause eye irritation and loss of vision. It usually occurs before the age of one. To treat the problem, the dog undergoes eye surgery after it grows up.

Respiratory distress syndrome or brachycephalic syndrome

Dogs like Shar-pei with short snouts are more prone to this disease. Watch for signs of fatigue, wheezing, coughing, gingivitis, or fainting in dogs. A short snout also increases the risk of other problems such as bloating, pneumonia and heatstroke. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended to correct the airway.

Shar-pei dogs are clean and quiet, don’t shed much hair or cause allergies. They aren’t crowded and playful. In general, they’re very good for living in the city.
