In the previous part, we talked about dog heatstroke. We said that some breeds are more susceptible to this disease. We also described severe sunburn, heatstroke, or hyperthermia. The symptoms of heatstroke are numerous and can be prevented in a variety of ways. In the previous part, we mentioned some examples of these methods to prevent overheating. In this section, we will discuss the other methods and treatment of this problem.
Heatstroke prevention
Put on your dog’s shoes.
Dog shoes may be difficult to put on. On hot summer days, streets or sidewalks get very hot and can damage your dog’s paws. It’s better to walk in the morning or the evening because the ground is cooler.
Take your dog out on the grass for fun.
A lawn area can be the best place to cool your dog because the grass cools the dog’s body due to moisture. If you keep a dog in the yard, cool the floor with water from time to time, as the floor heat will severely damage the dogs’ paws.
Temperature control and detection
Use a thermometer to find out the ambient temperature of your dog.
Keeping dogs indoors
Even if you keep your dog in the yard during other seasons, be sure to bring him indoors on hot days of the year. If you can’t do this at all, make sure his home is completely cool and has access to clean, cool water.
Swimming dogs
One of the best ways to prevent dogs from overheating is to swim in the summer. If you know a place around your house where the water is shallow and clean, let your dog swim there. If it isn’t possible, you can get a baby pool for your dog. Never let your dog drink river water.
Treatments
Going to the cool place
Take the dog away from the heat source and make a cool place.
Cool the dog’s body with the water
You should cool the dog’s body with water. But it has some points that if you don’t comply, he will be worse:
- Water shouldn’t be too cold; if you pour too cold water into the dog’s body, he will get worse.
- Just soak a few parts of the dog’s body, not the whole body.
- If the water sprinkles toward the dog’s body forcefully, he will get worse; Pour the water gently on the dog’s body.
- It’s better to wet the paw, tail and dog’s head.
- Soak a towel with cold water and put it in the middle of the dog’s feet or between her elbows.
Watering to the dogs
You shouldn’t give a lot of water to the heatstroke dog. Give him a small amount of water first.
Using wet towels
You can put the towel for short minutes between legs or dog elbows to cool him; But don’t put the towel on his body for a long time; it will slow down the treatment process.
Contact a veterinarian
Even if you think your dog’s warmth has been resolved and returned to normal; It’s better to contact the vet as soon as possible and take your dog to examine him. Because heatstroke can damage the internal organs seriously that only the veterinarian can detect it.
Using alcohol to relieve heatstroke in dogs
First, make sure no cover like fabric or blanket is on dog claws. Then put on the dog’s paw alcohol or alcoholic pads. Dogs are cooled through their feet; Alcohol helps to make this process faster. Avoid using excessive alcohol because the dog may lick his claws, and there will be many dangers. If you have studied forbidden foods for dogs; You know that alcohol is one of the most poisonous and deadly materials. It’s better to mix alcohol with water as much as 50/50 and then go to the dog’s paws.
Using stomach washing (by a veterinarian)
Enema with cold water ( by a veterinarian)
If you notice the dog’s heatstroke, contact the vet quickly. Don’t hesitate to hurt your dog in this regard. The most critical point in every incident is to keep yourself calm. Your calmness will make your dog calm too. The dog’s heatstroke is one of the problems that the owners usually encounter in the summer. They don’t sweat like humans and lose their body heat through the paws glands and breathing. Mishkagrooming with professional and skilled groomers helps you in this process. With regular and proper grooming, we guarantee your dog’s health and happiness.
