29 Nov Long-lived Dog Breeds (Part 1)
Having a dog is one of the great joys of life. Our furry friends give us unconditional love, companionship and indescribable smiles. Of course, having a dog also has its difficulties. We can deal with sabotage and other problems. But the bitter and undeniable fact is that we have a longer lifespan than dogs, which ultimately causes us grief. Thinking about losing your beloved pet often makes their owners ask, “How old will my dog be?”. Of course, there’s no way to answer this question accurately for each dog, but different averages are available for known breeds. In this part, we introduce some long-lived dog breeds.
Which dog breeds have the most extended lifespan?
Jerry Klein, DVM, is the Chief Veterinary Officer of the American Kennel Club. He says research shows that older dogs have a lifespan of about 7 to 10 years, and smaller dogs have a life expectancy of 13-16 years.
“Some breeds of Australian herd and terrier dogs are long-lived, but the longest-lived dog I have ever seen was a Schipperke – a small Belgian dog breed – who was 23 years old,” says Klein.
Klein adds that longevity is primarily determined by genetics and influenced by lifestyle choices that affect how a dog (or person) is “bred.” “For a quality and long life, health care is critical,” says Klein. By getting a good quality diet, regular physical activity and mental stimulation, and following veterinary advice for annual or semi-annual health tests, your dog will be more inclined to live a longer and healthier life. ”
