Other steps for training dogs to shake hands

Hold instead of scratching!

Try to make it clear to the dog that to reward him, he must hold his paws on your hand for at least 1 second (enough to start). The dog may misunderstand and think he should scratch your hand with his paws or do something else. So repeat this exercise to clear up any misunderstandings!

Training to shake hands in different situations

If all goes well, you can improve the dog’s shaking hand training or remove the dog’s treats and just ask him to shake hands with you. In the next step, it’s better to do the command by extending the hand with an open fist and the verbal phrase. Of course, for your dog to pass this stage successfully, he must have realized what you’re waiting for. Otherwise, he will still be waiting for treats and a reward from you. If you want to behave more professionally, you can extend your hand vertically with an open fist to the dog and say the word. So your dog realizes that he should shake hands. To begin, it’s better to consider the dog’s treat after training so that this behaviour is also institutionalized in his mind. If your dog isn’t helping or doesn’t understand the shaking hands, repeat the previous steps or even start training from the beginning.

Teach the dog to shake hands

Now that your dog has fully learned to shake hands with you, you can add a few more movements to the process. When you extend your hand and the dog puts his paws on yours, raise and lower your hand several times. Do this gently. Of course, after this step, don’t forget to give him a treat. If you feel your dog is anxious, it’s better to stop training or go back to the previous steps. Repeat the training a few times so that your dog understands what you are waiting for completely.

Two important points

First point

Dog’s shaking hand training is done separately for each paw! So you may need to practice this training with both hands. Another solution is to teach him to shake hands with the one closest to him. So in the early steps of training, you may need to reach out to the hand you want to shake hands with. By doing this, you will notice that by extending each hand from your side, he will bring the opposite hand towards you and shake your hand. If you want to shake your dog’s hand with both hands, you have to train it separately for each hand.

Second point

The peace that exists in the home is completely different from the noisy world outside. It’s better to repeat this exercise in the park or in crowded places too. Repeat these exercises until your dog keeps doing it and doesn’t need to analyze the situation.

Training a dog to shake hands is simple but with minor complications that, if not followed, will result in a reaction that looks like anything but a shaking hand!
