09 Nov The Complete Guide to Flea Removal from Dogs and Homes (Part 2)
In the first part, we talked about flea removal in dogs and at home. Fleas can’t live on the human body, but can easily get inside the house and on the dog’s body from outside and other animals. The first step is to prepare the house for flea removal. In the previous section, we mentioned 12 things to prepare the house. In this part, we will eliminate fleas and keep them away from the home space.
Fleas in dogs
These pests are tiny and microscopic; Therefore, they aren’t easily detected when they enter the dog’s body and before breeding. The dimensions of dog fleas are less than one millimetre. They have hard skin that isn’t easily damaged, and their colour is blackish brown. Fleas don’t have wings; They can only jump, and it’s through this mutation that they enter the dog’s body.
Performing flea removal
Place the flea repellents on newspapers or plastic bags in the middle of the room where you want to spray.
Put a cover under the flea repellent to protect its surrounding from debris or possible damage.
Make sure all flea repellents are in the correct place before activating
When one of the flea repellents is activated, you should leave the house immediately to prevent diseases caused by pesticide exposure.
Activate the decontamination and leave the house
Follow the instructions on the package to enable flea repellents. If you have used multiple flea repellents, start with a room farther from the exit and work your way out of the house. Don’t return to the room when the first flea remover is activated.
Stay out of the house.
Avoid unnecessary contact with chemicals by keeping all people and pets out of the house for 2 to 4 hours. Carefully read the label to calculate the recommended time to stay away from home.
Treat your pet against fleas.
It’s important to keep fleas away from your pet when you are out of the house so that they don’t return the fleas to the environment as soon as you enter the house. Ask your veterinarian for flea repellents to remove any adult fleas on your pet. Bathe your pet with anti-flea shampoo. Take your pet to a groomer for special flea treatment.
Removing flea from the house.
When you return, clean your house thoroughly.
Dead fleas, chemical residues and dust are everyday things seen in the home after decontamination. Thoroughly clean the floor with a vacuum cleaner. Clean the tables and counters and wash the covers, clothes and all surfaces. It is better to wear gloves when cleaning. Discard gloves after work so that the chemicals attached to the gloves don’t affect your skin.
Open the windows to ventilate the house and reduce unpleasant odours
The smell of pesticides may persist for several hours or even days after spraying. Open doors and all vents or turn on ventilation fans to help flush odours out of the house.
Sweep the house every day for 10 to 14 days
Daily house sweeping kills all hatched larvae or adult fleas that have survived decontamination.
Be prepared for multiple sprays.
Some products aren’t effective in killing flea eggs. Flea eggs or their larvae may hatch a few days or weeks after your first spray. Monitor your home and dog for a few weeks and look for signs of fleas.
Monitor your dog for signs of fleas again
Flea stains or droplets appear as reddish-brown spots on your dog. If he has itching, check under his cover for signs of flea spots or adult fleas.
