03 Jun How to Bathe Your Dog (What to Avoid)
Naturally, dogs under 2 don’t need to a bath, because their mother does a thorough grooming for them. But if the mother is not present, it is still dangerous for the puppy to be bathed by humans, because puppies under two are prone to catching flu or cold. So, to make sure the puppy stays healthy after taking a bath, you’d better take them to a professional dog groomer nearby to bathe your dog.
How to Bathe Your Dog
To bathe your dog the proper way, you need dogs’ special shampoo. Also, an adult dog needs a bath once in a month. More frequent bathing with shampoo would damage the dog’s skin.
To bathe your dog, have tub in your dog’s size and fill it with water to the half. then pour some dogs shampoo in the water. You can ask a dog groomer what shampoo fits best with your dog’s skin.
Then let your dog slowly enter the tub, and rub their body with your palms. Don’t pour the shampoo on your dog, because the remaining if the shampoo might get trapped between the hair.
After washing your dog, let him out of the tub and rinse the foam with clean and low-pressure water.
Then dry your dog and let him out of the bath.
How to dry your dog after bathing
Dogs will shake themselves to dry their skin and fur. this will splash water to almost everywhere and you and the surrounding will soak in water after that.
So, take some distance from your dog while he does this. Otherwise take a towel quickly and wrap it around your dog and then dry him with a hairdryer. Then brush the hair and let them out.
Dog’s Skin
The skin of a dog contains a fat layer, which plays a key role in protecting the skin and fur. This fat layer prevents dryness and PH level changes on the skin. So, washing your dog’s skin frequently will damage the fat layer, hence the whole skin. In most cases, hair loss in a dog is related to repetitive times of washing a dog with shampoo during a month.
Things to avoid when bathing a dog
Don’t let water into the dog’s ear
The channel of a dog’s ear consists of a vertical and a horizontal tube, and if water enters this channel, it will be trapped at the end of the horizontal tube. So, the dog won’t let it out by shaking his head and this will lead to ear infection.
To avoid this while bathing your dog, take a small cotton ball and oil it, then put it into your dog’s ears. Don’t forget to take them out after the bath.
Don’t let your dog exit the bath while he is still wet
This is simply because your dog might catch cold. Especially if they have recently skipped a vaccine, and it is winter and cold. During summer, the fans can still cause cold for a wet dog.
In addition, if your dog is wet, he will immediately get dirty again.
To avoid this, use a heater or hairdryer to dry your dog completely.
Four reasons for using dogs’ special shampoo
1- Human shampoos contain strong chemicals that degrease skin, which is only suitable for human’s head skin. This could damage a dog’s skin. These chemicals are absent in a dog’s shampoo.
2- In addition, some chemical odors are added to human shampoo that can irritate a dog’s olfaction.
3- Remember that if the foam of a human shampoo enters a dog’s eye, besides from the redness and irritation, the dog’s sight will be disturbed for a few days.
4- Using human shampoo to bathe your dog causes dryness and deformation in the animal’s hair and will lead to hair loss after some time.
